The inscription which appears on an oblong limestone slab, was first discovered by Brunnow at the end of the 19th century and rediscovered by Tzaferis in 1990. The inscription comprises three parts. The main part was engraved in a sunken frame of a Tabula Ansata (a tablet with dovetail handles). Two additional sections of the inscription were engraved on the margins with seven words on the right and five words on the left . The inscription relates to the building of a tower by Abu Sai'd Izz ad---Din Iyaz Jaharkas in the year 601AH/1204-1205CE. The tower was not found in situ since al-Mu'azzam I'sa, the sultan of the kingdom of Damascus ordered the demolition of Banias as part of his policy to destroy all the major fortifications that could be turned into Crusader strongholsd. .
