The Survey Recommendations
Conservation measures required on the wall:
1. Seal the horizontal surfaces from seeping water: the tops of the walls (crenellations and embrasures), sentry path, roofs of the towers and the ancient remains that are adjacent to the wall.
2. Remove vegetation.
3. Fill in cracks.
4. Fill in the gaps between the wall and the horizontal levels next to the wall: the promenade, the sentry path, the roofs of buildings, sidewalks etc.
5. Fill in empty joints with a lime-based bonding material. In those regions where it is not possible to prevent water seepage by means of proper drainage - mostly from the direction of the Old City where the ground level is higher than the outside of the wall - it is recommended that the joints be left open in order to allow the moisture to dissipate from the core of the wall. Nonetheless, the most proper solution to this problem is correcting the drainage at the level of the Old City.
6. Conserve the ancient wall remains.
7. Stabilize the exposed core using a lime-based bonding material or reconstructing the outer facades of the remains.
8. Create slopes at the top of the wall that slant outward in both directions for the entire length of the promenade and the sentry path in order to allow the water to flow off the wall, without it standing on horizontal planes.
Other measures necessary in order to preserve the wall:
1. Prepare drainage in the regions next to the wall including the roofs of buildings, in order to prevent rain water from flowing in the direction of the wall.
2. Create sloped, sealed strips that 'breathe' in the region of the gardens and lawns adjacent to the wall.
3. Avoid planting trees and vegetation next to the wall.
4. Utilize rustproof metal in development work.
5. Keep the public away from regions where the outer layers of the hard limestone are flaking.
6. Install a system for monitoring cracks.
7. Conduct routine maintenance: remove vegetation; clean the sealant on the horizontal surfaces, point up joints. It is important that the conservation work and the various maintenance measures be done by professional conservators and under conservation guidance.
8. The principles of preserving the monument need to be explained to the population that resides next to the wall and to those that work in its vicinity and these people need to be enlisted in the ongoing effort of the conservation maintenance of the monument.
