The uniqueness of the inscriptions from Kuntillet Ajrud in northern Sinai lies in their great importance to understanding the religion of Israel in the year c. 800 BCE. Despite the fact the site is located in northern Sinai, west of Qadesh Barnea and south of the road from Gaza to Eilat, the inscriptions reveal a surprisingly close connection with Israel and not Judah. The script is similar to that of the Samaria ostraca (or it is Phoenician), to the language characteristic of Israel and the cult associated with Samaria. We will demonstrate this with a selection of inscriptions from the site.
