The church at the top of the acropolis is the only one that was built within the limits of the city’s civic center. It was erected at the top of the tell rather than in the center at the foot of it, unlike other cities such as Jerash, Pella, Gadera and numerous other cities in Nysa-Scytopolis no churches have been found at the civic center. Moreover, not even a basilica church, not to mention a cathedral, was found in the city that was the seat of the bishop. The church at the top of the tell was most likely built in the second half of the 5th century CE which was a long time after the temple of Zeus Akraios was destroyed and dismantled. The church was built in the style of an ambulatorium whose central part is open and parallels of this model were found in our region. These churches were not usually intended for community use. It is possible that the acropolis church was dedicated to John the Baptist and may also have been part of a monastic complex. All the other churches were located on the fringes of the city, on Tel Iztabba, next to the city wall and all of them were churches that were part of a monastic complex.
