Conservation of Jaffa Gate Section |

The Jaffa Gate section, between Jaffa Gate and the northwestern corner of the city walls (Zahal Square), was constructed on top of the eastern bank of the Ben Hinnom Valley. On the inside of the wall are buildings belonging to the Latin Patriarchate and College des Freres. Marks left from breaching the section of the city wall near the citadel, in honor of the arrival of Kaiser Wilhelm II and the filling-in of the moat are evidence of the later history of the gate, and are still visible on the wall's facades. In the War of Independence the gate and the city's western wall became the frontline; this historical fact is evident in the bullet marks visible in the wall's facades.

Jaffa Gate is the only gate in the city's western wall, which linked the city to the road that leads west, toward the port of Jaffa. Due to its strategic location and its importance and centrality, the gate has undergone numerous changes throughout history.
