According to law the antiquities that are uncovered in archaeological excavations in the Land of Israel or are found, collected or exposed by chance, belong to the State of Israel. The Antiquities Authority, through the National Treasures Department, is in charge of registering, photographing and the complete scientific and computerized documentation of the antiquities. This documentation serves as a principal data bank for researchers and curators in Israel and abroad.

The Antiquities Authority, through the National Treasures Department, is responsible for the safekeeping and management of the antiquities’ integrity, for advising museums, initiating exhibitions and lending objects to museums, and for exhibits in Israel and overseas.

There are approximately one million ancient items registered in the National Treasures, among them: scrolls, coins, pottery vessels, stone objects, glass vessels, jewelry, and wooden and metallic artifacts. In addition to these there are also architectural elements, agricultural installations, etc. The offices and storerooms of the National Treasures Department are located in Bet Shemesh, the Israel Museum and Rockefeller Museum and at Har Hozevim.
