Gold Crusader Coins from Acre
Numerous coastal and marine development and construction projects have been executed in the last decade in the vicinity of Acre. The deepening of the acre harbor project took a number of years to complete. The accompanying underwater archaeological activities yielded numerous discoveries and finds. Among them were remnants of a wooden pier built after the Crusader period, attesting to continuous maritime activities in the harbor after the Crusader period despite the destruction of the harbor.
In addition, shipwrecks belonging to Roman, Byzantine, Crusader and Ottoman periods, including a hoard of gold Crusader coins were discovered, as well as hundreds of pottery vessels from different periods, anchors, metal artifacts and fishing equipment. These finds shed light on the maritime culture and commercial ties of Acre with Mediterranean countries throughout the ages.
Additional surveys were carried out on the northern and western coasts of Acre, where quarries and various hewn features were documented, among them a millstone stone quarry.
